This morning my coffee machine tripped the electrics the moment I switched it on, and smoke started coming out from the top. It’s never done anything like this before, and it was working totally fine yesterday. Now it’s seems completely dead and I’m not sure if it’s worth trying to open it up or if something inside has just completely burnt out. Has anyone dealt with this before? would you try to fix it or just replace it at this point?

Opening it up might show you the obvious culprit, but honestly, coffee machines aren't usually worth the troubleshooting unless it's a high end model you're attached to and the issue is even if you identify the burnt component, sourcing parts and ensuring nothing else degraded from the short can turn into a time sink. How old is the machine, and what brand?

lol, just kidding. Smoke and tripping the breaker usually mean that you had a dead short somewhere inside. This is most often the heating element failing catastrophically or a short in the main power board/controller. The smoke is usually the insulation burning off the wires right at the failure point
Do not plug the machine back in, and do not try to dry it out. That level of failure requires a replacement

Yeah, I'd replace it honestly, smoking and tripping breakers, could be a shorted heating element or fried circuit board. Too much hassle for a DIY repair on something that already had an electrical failure that dramatic.
