Dishwasher not draining completely

Its a Bosch dishwasher and its about 5 years old, its been leaving water in the bottom after cycles and it's getting gross and smelly between the times I use it. When I run a cycle, I can hear the pump working, or at least I think I can. It makes the normal swooshing sounds but after I see standing water. My husband wants to just call a repair guy but those service calls are expensive and half the time they just clean the filter and charge you $150. He's pretty handy with basic repairs and I get that he may not want the stress but I just want to know if its something we can potentially handle or if we'd have to surrender to the powers that be

I'd say start with the filter and drain hose, that solves it 80% of the time and takes maybe 20 minutes. If you still have standing water after that, then you can decide if you want to go deeper or call someone. At least you'll know you tried the easy stuff first and didn't pay $150 for a filter cleaning

@Sarah.ah I’d second that. Start simple. Check the filter, the drain hose, and also the air gap if your model has one. Sometimes a kinked hose or small clog is all that’s stopping it from draining fully. Have you peeked under the sink where the hose connects?

@Sarah.ah Most of the time it’s just a small clog or kink causing the standing water.
