Hey guys, before you touch that broken dishwasher, let's talk about the one thing that separates a successful DIY repair from a trip to the emergency room.

Always disconnect the power first. Look this isn't optional, you should unplug the appliance completely before you start working on it whether you've done it a hundred times before or not. If it's hardwired like a built in dishwasher or oven, flip the circuit breaker because just turning the appliance off isn't enough, it's still connected to electricity and here's something that catches people off guard, you see appliances like microwaves have high voltage capacitors that can hold a lethal charge even after you unplug them. If you're not confident about what you're dealing with, its always better you call a professional.

Next is to gear up properly. Use safety glasses, work gloves and your rubber soled shoes, they're necessities that can prevent serious injury. I have a terrible story on this myself but I'd leave that for next time, haha

Now to a not so common advice. Take photos as you disassemble things cos your memory might not be as reliable as you think when you're trying to reassemble everything later. Oh, and actually do read the manual, manufacturers include safety warnings because something went wrong before

Lastly, you have to know your limits. If you're dealing with complex wiring, gas lines, or anything that makes you genuinely uncomfortable, that's your instinct telling you to stop. There's zero shame in calling a professional cos your safety is worth more than saving a few bucks on a service call
That's all I have for today, till next time I guess and look I get it DIY repairs can be rewarding and cost effective, but not at the expense of your wellbeing.

Excellent post! It's good to have these reminders!
You've hit on the absolute most important rule in appliance repair. Always disconnect the power!
It sounds simple, it's the one step that truly prevents a disaster.
Safety always comes first, and your well-being is worth more than saving a few bucks.
The reminder about hardwired appliances and the circuit breaker is key. Just hitting the off switch is a common mistake.
And thank you for mentioning capacitors in things like microwaves.
That residual charge is a silent killer, which is why if you're not confident in safely discharging them, you call a professional.
I've also found that taking photos during disassembly is a huge timesaver!

Makes so much sense, love the post, especially the part about knowing your limits, too many people underestimate how dangerous household current can be and yeah I'm ooking forward to that “terrible story” next time
